O Totem foi reconstruído e mostra para onde devem caminhar as interfaces de exibição de vídeo.
No dia 06/05/2014 o Sabayon liberou novas atualizações para diversos pacotes, onde estava incluso pacotes do Gnome 3.12 contendo suas novas aplicações. Como eu sou usuário do Sabayon Linux, uma distro rolling release – a qual você instala apenas uma vez e segue realizando atualizações dos aplicativos, geralmente para as versões mais recentes – tenho o “privilégio” de estar sempre com o sistema atualizado contendo as versões mais recente dos aplicativos, e assim fui surpreendido com a versão 3.12 do Gnome-Shell.
Esse aplicativo, Vídeos – o antigo Totem, mas que ainda utiliza o nome “totem” para executar o aplicativo – traz novidades bem interessantes para um player de vídeo, e posso até dizer que essa interação trazida pelo novo player, pode ser o caminho para o futuro de muitos player existentes e até dos novos.
Tentarei mostrar algumas novidades que vi até o momento sobre esse novo player de vídeo e até aonde vi estou gostando muito. Apensar de eu usar o Gnome-shell – que utiliza a biblioteca GTK para compatibilidade com os seus aplicativos –, uso muito o SMplayer – que utiliza a biblioteca QT – para a reprodução dos meus vídeos.
O Vídeos do Gnome-shell ainda não se compara ao SMplayer pelas funcionalidades e nem pela execução. Tendo em vista que o Vídeos visa ser um player bem mais simples e intuitivo e nesse quesito ele se sai muito bem, mas ainda consome o dobro de memória em relação ao SMplayer.
Obs.: Gostaria de ressaltar que esse player ainda é bem prematuro, a versão que foi reescrita, e pode apresentar alguns erros. Até agora eu só vi um, que é quando eu ativo a legenda de um filme e depois a desativo, com isso o player trava.
Quando você executa o player, tendo em vista que os vídeos já estejam indexados, essa será a “cara” do player que você verá:
Note que é uma interface muito simples.
O botão “+”, no canto superior esquerdo, seve para você adicionar vídeos de uma pasta local ou diretamente da WEB, utilizando o link do vídeo, como, por exemplo, um vídeo do YouTube. Existem dois botões, um chamado Recentes, são os vídeos que estão em seu computador e foram indexados, e em Canais são “links” que abrem vídeos que estão diretamente na internet. No meu apresenta três canais que eu posso assistir vídeos, são: o Rai.tv, o Blip.tv e o Apple Movie Traillers – são traillers de filmes. Existe também um botão em forma de lupa – aonde você pode fazer busca de vídeos, por exemplo do YouTube e assisti-los diretamente no seu player. O próximo ícones de “certo” um “V”, aonde você pode selecionar vários vídeos e deletar ou também colocá-los para serem exibidos em sequência.

Não existe distinção na exibição de vídeos que são exibidos localmente ou em algum canal de busca diretamente da WEB. Assim como não há distinção na execução dos vídeos, são como estivessem sendo executados localmente. Veja o exemplo abaixo de um vídeo do YouTube sendo executado no player Vídeos:
